The Central European country of Hungary has borders with Austria, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Romania, Ukraine and Slovakia. It measures approximately 250 kilometers north / south and 525 kilometers west /east, and has a population of just over 10,000,000.

The Hungarian capital was founded in 1873 when Pest, Buda and Obuda were united to become Budapest., where today, the population is approximately 1,720,000.

In 1987, UNESCO declared Castle Hill and the banks of the river Danube as World Heritage Sites, and in 2002 UNESCO added the Buda Castle quarter, Andrassy Avenue, Heroes’ Square and the Millennium Underground Railway (the second oldest in the world).

There are 9 bridges connecting Buda and Pest, with the oldest bridge being the much photographed “Chain Bridge”, which was opened in 1849. The Hungarian Parliament building is the second largest parliament building in Europe, and is located alongside the river Danube, on the Pest side of the city.

Budapest is easily accessible from the U.K., with direct flights from London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London Luton, Manchester and Edinburgh, by British Airways, Malev, Wizz Air, easyJet and jet2.com.

A city of history, wonderful sites and scenery, Budapest is well worth considering for a second, or even first, home!
