Sardinia is the second largest of Italy's islands, but only has a population of approximately 1.7 million – by 2010, 33,000 foreign nationals had discovered the island’s many attractions, and were living there.
Sardinia has 5 mountain ranges, 3 rivers, and 54 artificial lakes and dams, as well as a coastline of some 1,800 kilometers, which includes small coves of white sandy beaches.
The island enjoys 300 days of sunshine each year, with a mild Mediterranean climate, and together with locally produced cured ham, salami, spit roasting pig, ewes milk cheese, and full bodied wines, makes this a place to seriously consider for your first or second home.
Sardinia boasts 3 international airports, in the south at Cagliari, the capital of the island, at Alghero in the north-west, and at Olbia in the north-east. There is a good selection of direct flights from the U.K., (although some are seasonal), from London Gatwick, London Stansted, Manchester, Edinburgh, East Midlands and Leeds / Bradford, by British Airways, easyJet, Ryanair, Bmibaby, Thomson Airways, and Monarch.
